The main chart is for all disciplines over 1600m and is based on a Fitness Value (sometimes referred to as Shape Index or IDF) of five. If your horse has either a higher or lower Fitness Value (FV) than five, the number of points should be adjusted according to the FV chart below and the ride recalculated.

It makes no difference to the horse which order the instructions are placed in. W-P-V will result in exactly the same effort and energy expenditure as V-W-P. However, there may be some tactical advantages to the order in which the instructions are given in terms of traffic and blocking.

‘Day of taking square’ refers to the length of time in days since the horse last progressed from its previous number of squares to its current number of squares.


If a horse had six stamina squares yesterday but today has seven, this would be Stamina [7] First day and tomorrow will be Stamina [7] second day.

All horses with a stamina rating of four or more over 1000m should be ridden W-W-W-W-W


When calculating a ride over 2200m or 3000m (for older horses, peaked at stamina 10), you should use exactly the same (or as close as you can get) number of points that would apply for 1600m, they just need to be stretched further.

Younger horses or those with less than 10 squares for stamina may require a reduced drive over distances further than 1600m. More details on this reduction can be found here.


If your horse is around 169 points for 1600m (W-W-W-W-W-W-W-P), the suggested 2200m ride would be W-W-W-W-W-P-A-A-U-U-U (170pts) and the suggested 3000m ride would be W-W-W-W-A and the rest “U ” (170 points)

If your horse is around 172 points for 1600m (W-W-W-W-W-W-W-V), the suggested 2200m ride would be W-W-W-W-W-V-A-A-U-U-U (173pts) and the suggested 3000m ride would be W-W-W-W-P and the rest “U ” (173 points)
