With the Newturf/Horse Racing Buzz tipping competition underway and some early punters faring better than others, it seems like a good time to begin a regular tipping column here on Buzz, ahead of the real cash betting launch on Jan 21st. There are two betting races available for Monday night’s action, the 19:50 Rock Of Gibraltar Derby and the 20:10 Mid Dancer Hurdle. Of the two, we much prefer the Mid Dancer as a betting proposition.
This is a competitive looking affair and a case can be made for a number of the 13 runner field. Znow Man Mz possesses a great deal of speed but often seems to struggle to get home in his races. It could well be a tip in itself that Jemchipsa Magic has opted to put an outside jockey on his Jemchipsa Riverball, suggesting that the apparent second string, Jemchipsa Musker is favoured today. A couple of runs ago, Jemchipsa Musker chased home two decent types when finishing third in a good quality race. Aethon who reopposes today was behind then and that one wouldn’t be without a chance here either. The blinkers have been deployed for Jemchipsa Musker and I expect him to go very close.
Lusaka and La Californie are others that have place claims but preference today is for the Thompson Stud owned colt, Warhead. Two pieces of form really stand out with this one – a third of fourteen in the Zaiyad Hurdle where he was narrowly pipped by a very fit La Californie for second spot and a win in the El Triunfo Hurdle. Both of these efforts came on soft ground and with conditions the same for today’s race, a repeat of this level of form would be good enough to see him involved in the finish.
Suggested bet – Warhead to win. For those that like to do forecasts, you might like to consider Aethon and Jemchipsa Muster as the ones to give him most to do.
